Description: New book, 255 pages, 500+ photos. The Australian machine gun carrier was undoubtedly the most successful armoured fighting vehicle built in Australia during the Second World War. The Australian carriers were largely based on their British counterparts, but differed in many details that made them unique. They were used in North Africa and the Middle East, in Malaya, on the islands north of Australia, and in defence of the Australian mainland. They were also supplied to Allied armies such as the British, American, and Chinese Nationalist armies. The type remained in service after the Second World War and was used in Japan and Korea until the mid-1950s, as well as for training purposes in Australia. Unfortunately, derivatives such as the Australian 2-pounder and 3-inch mortar carriers and the tracked truck and transporter trailer were not as successful, so the projects were discontinued and orders for large quantities were cancelled before completion. Australia also received English carriers of various types through allocation from British sources or through direct purchase from the United Kingdom. These played a significant role in North Africa and the Middle East, but were gradually taken out of service after their arrival in Australia. This book summarises the development, construction and use of tracked vehicles by Australia in over 500 images, many of which are previously unpublished. Detailed texts and extensive captions explain all aspects of the tracked vehicles developed for and used by the Australian armed forces.
