The Hapsburg Empire controlled much of central and southern Europe and what is today Austria, Hungary, the Czech and Slovak republics, eastern and southern Poland, northern Italy and Belgium and its armies reflected that diverse population. Austria was at the center of most of the political events of the time and was a major participant in nearly all the conflicts that took place. Its armies were not always victorious, but often Austria prevailed at the treaty table and the throne of the Holy Roman Empire remained in the hands of the Hapsburgs. These two volumes cover the Austrian Army from the beginning of the reign of Ferdinand III in 1637 to the abdication of Francis I (of Austria) in 1835. The artist Allemande produced many studies of the Austrian Army in the early 19th century including this, his most important work published in 1850. It depicts this colorful army in its various branches through the ages.
