The letters and diaries of Lieutenant Hausmann have never been published before, and are a unique source describing the life and duties of a Bavarian officer in the Napoleonic Wars. Hausmann's first campaign was the 1805 war against Austria, followed by Poland and Prussia in 1806-7. In 1809 he fought against the Tyrolian insurrection, and in the battles of Abensberg and Znaim. He survived the 1812 campaign in Russia, and the 1814 campaign in France when the Bavarians switched sides and fought against Napoleon.
