Description:
New book, 50 pages. The book opens with a general introduction, covering the development of prototype XBT1 and the production BT-1 a/c ; aircraft on strength by month from 1935 through 1944 and basic technical data. Then follow the units - the initial first-line pre-Pearl-Harbor deployments by VB-5 (USS Yorktown) & VB-6 (USS Enterprise) and subsequent stateside usage as trainers & hacks, well into WW2. The author draws attention to an inherent defect of the design - an abbreviated wingspan which often led to fatal stalls when flying at low-speed. (In retrospect perhaps not as poignant as the fates of other contemporary dive-bombers ; Skuas, Vought 156’s, LN 501’s, its immediate predecessor the Northrop 17, or eventually Ju87s which would all display more serious shortcomings when flown belligerently.) The various second-line units with their locations which flew the steadily diminishing numbers of BT-1s after withdrawal from service with VB-5 & VB-6 are listed as are the a/c which eventually became allocated to them. The author then presents individual airframe fates in the Register, sorted by Bu.Aer numbers.. Readers who are not knowledgeable of USN terminology are advised to digest the glossary of terms presented on the front inner cover before tackling this chapter. Aircraft which were lost in flight accidents have their final mission & crew fates presented in red text. Richly illustrated with 39 period photographs (one in colour), 11 colour fuselage profiles by Malcolm Laird, and colour drawings of squadron section cowling & upper wing markings, the reader will soon acquire a sound knowledge and manifold visual impressions of the Northrop BT-1 during its decade of existence. A novelty in this third book of the series are detailed close-up photographs of the airframe - of interest to modellers. The book closes with a Roll of Honour, listing the 14 young men who lost their lives in crashes of BT-1s.
